I'm trying to write to the Serial port on my Mac.

Here's a screengrab of the error I'm getting:

Any thoughts?

The port name defaults to COM1, which is very likely to be wrong on a Mac!
The example uses

 new Serial(this, Serial.list()[0], 9600);

(the 9600 could be omitted since it is the default).

Thanks for the suggestion but it's still firing up the same error...

You have a PortInUseException exception, which probably means the serial port is already owned by some other application on your Mac.
See CommPortIdentifier reference (open() method).

Note: that's not the same error...
